Whereas traditionally first philosophy denoted either metaphysics or theology, only to be reconceived by Heidegger as fundamental ontology, Levinas argued that it is ethics that should be so conceived. Emmanuel Lévinas, (born December 30, 1905 [January 12, 1906, Old Style], Kaunas, Lithuania—died December 25, 1995, Paris, France), Lithuanian-born French philosopher renowned for his powerful critique of the preeminence of ontology (the philosophical study of being) in the history of Western philosophy, particularly in the work of the German philosopher Martin Heidegger (1889–1976). Emmanuel Levinas (b. 1906–d. 1995) was a philosopher famous for having developed an original interpretation of Edmund Husserl’s phenomenological method, using the latter to address the foundations of ethics and normativity. Professor Castleberry gives a lecture on the 20th Century Continental philosopher Emmanuel Levinas and his thinking surrounding the "face of the other." He The Levinas Philosophy Summer Seminar is an annual one-week long summer seminar of research and discussion. The program begins July 2013, in Vilnius, Lithuania, birth country of Levinas. In the summer of 2014 it will be held in Buffalo, New York, USA. Each summer the focus will be on a different aspect of Levinas’s philosophy. This volume examines the relevance of Emmanuel Levinas’s work to recent developments in analytic philosophy. Contemporary analytic philosophers working in metaethics, the philosophy of mind, and the metaphysic of personal identity have argued for views similar to those espoused by Levinas.
